I need portfolio tips! + DIsney College Program?

Kauri's Journal

Hello all,

One year from now I would like to be starting an internship with an animation or illustration company, preferably an animation studio like Disney or Pixar. I have a long way to go as far as developing my skills and refining my portfolio. I've hit a few bumps in the road along my way and I am ready to wipe the dust off of my tablet and kick my own arse. I am attempting to reach out to those of you who might have an idea as to what I should work on for my portfolio. I know studios like Pixar want you to show off the skills that you have, and show the work that is related to the position you want. My art is very eclectic, I like a variety of things and I am wondering if I should zero in and focus on certain areas like character design or story boarding. I wouldn't even mind being an art director one day. Basically my interest lies in pre-production, art, drawing, forming ideas, character design and the like. Should I make character sheets? Is it imperative that I include an animation in my portfolio? (I am a fan of 3D but my heart will always belong to 2D) I want to focus and put effort into pieces that aim to impress. Currently I'm doing so many different things that I feel like a jack of all trades, master of none.

Advice is much appreciated. If you have experience in this area, please share any insight that you have!

Also, has anyone out there done the Disney College Program? How did you like it?

40k Kiriban

No one has claimed the kiriban yet! How unfortunate. If you think you were remotely close and are interested in a small piece of art for thanks, please send me your page view number and we'll go from there. Thanks for the views! I hope to get some artwork uploaded soon. Ordering a new desktop (iMac) and Painter is on my to do list. I think that will seriously increase my digital art workflow. Next, I need subjects to draw, as well as inspiration!

I'm coming up on 40,000 views! To celebrate, as well as boost my motivation to do some character art, I'd like to offer a free piece of artwork to whoever snags the 40k view. Please take a screenshot and send it my way, and we'll discuss the piece. Thanks for the views!

Also, you should check out my friends Etsy account. She has some pretty adorable stuff. (:
